At Back Bay Veterinary Clinic, we stay on top of the latest medical trends in order to give our clients and patients the very best experience. In today’s busy world, we understand it’s not always easy or desirable to make a trip to the office when your furry kid needs veterinary attention.

We’re excited to offer telemedicine appointments as a convenient and modern way to supplement our patient’s care. Telemedicine appointments are scheduled with our team of veterinarians and allow us to connect voice to voice utilizing video, photos, and messaging with the TeleTails telemedicine app.

How Does Veterinary Telemedicine Work?

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Download Teletails from the Google Play or Apple Store
  2. Connect with us using our Teletails code: BBVC01
  3. Set up your account.
  4. Message us or request a video consult to connect with one of our veterinarians!

Our virtual visits are scheduled during our regular business hours. We’ll arrange a time that works for your schedule and ours. You can also give us a call on our regular phone at 617-247-2273 to schedule your telemedicine appointment.

When Should I Use Pet Telemedicine?

Telemedicine is a convenient tool to use with mild conditions or quick questions you have about your pet’s health.

Some appropriate telemedicine situations include:

  • Sneezing or other mild symptoms
  • Behavioral changes
  • Skin rechecks
  • Puppy/kitten socialization and training guidance
  • Post-op recovery questions
  • Ongoing treatment plan and medication discussion
  • Hospice care

If your pet’s issue cannot be resolved over a virtual visit, we may request that you come in for an appointment. This allows us to fully examine your pet and perform any necessary diagnostics.

Virtual Visit FAQs

Why offer virtual visits?

When our companions are not at their best, our initial urge is to consult Dr. Google or hit the message boards, hoping to provide ourselves a sense of ease we never reach. With telemedicine, your own veterinarian will help figure out what’s not right. Virtual care is not about replacing visits to the clinic, but rather, complementing clinic services and establishing a means to monitor patients and communicate with clients using modern telecommunication tools.

Clients are always welcome to schedule an appointment in the clinic, but we hope the flexibility of a TeleTails consultation is something that will be valued and appreciated.

What is the TeleTails app?

TeleTails is a digital platform that connects veterinarians with their patients through secure video chat and texting.

How much does it cost for a telemedicine consult?

Virtual visits are customized based on the patient’s needs and presenting issues. Consultations initiated by the client are $85 and rechecks initiated by the veterinarian are $70. Surgical and dental procedures performed at Back Bay Veterinary Clinic will be rechecked free of charge.  Our team will guide you during the entire process of your pet’s medical plan and communicate recommended treatments and their associated costs.

When do you charge my credit card?

At the initiation of each virtual visit, the fee for the consultation will appear for approval. Your consent is needed before advancing to the consultation with your veterinarian. Once the virtual visit has been completed, payment will be collected. If you elect to cancel the visit, your credit card will not be charged.

What if my pet's problem cannot be fixed via a virtual visit and I have to schedule an office visit for a physical exam?

If you start with a virtual visit consultation and end up at the clinic for problem resolution, your veterinarian will communicate the next steps based on his or her findings. Your veterinarian will discuss a medical treatment plan, and may make price adjustments on a case by case basis. Our goal is to provide the best care for your pet, and to provide convenient and cost-effective options for you, our client.

Can i use the app if my pet has not had a physical exam in the last 6 months?

At Back Bay Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians perform semi-annual examinations for best practice preventive healthcare. The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) believes that veterinary telemedicine should only be conducted within an existing Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR). For a veterinarian to diagnose, prescribe medication, or otherwise treat an animal on TeleTails, they need to be seen for a physical exam within the last 6 months.

I am not a client of Back Bay Veterinary Clinic. Can I use the app?

The TeleTails application is reserved for patients who have established physical care at our practice. Meeting you and your furry friend at the clinic will provide an opportunity to perform a more comprehensive evaluation. Given the nature of a virtual visit, we are unable to perform certain aspects of a physical exam.

At what times can I use the app?

An application request for a virtual visit can be submitted at any time. A Client Service Representative will reach out to confirm the nature of the request, desired appointment time and follow up instructions on what to expect prior to your consultation. The TeleTails app is not for emergencies, urgent or severe medical issues. If you have a question or an immediate concern, please call our office directly at 617-247-2273.
